It’s always nice to be No. 1—especially if it’s your sixth year in a row! That’s right, On-Screen Takeoff® (OST) once again ranked at the top of the takeoff and estimating software sector in the 2017 Construction Technology Report.
Ever since JB Knowledge began painstakingly collecting, compiling, and analyzing data for their well-respected annual ConTech Report, On-Screen Takeoff has owned this top spot—starting with the first survey in 2012 through 2017. The report is designed to provide an accurate portrayal of spending habits and tech trends in the construction industry. In 2017, On-Screen Takeoff was listed as the top takeoff tool with 41.5% of respondents using OST—beating out 14 others in the takeoff software category.
Published in partnership with the Mechanical Contractors Association of America (MCAA), the Construction Financial Management Association (CFMA), and Texas A&M University’s Construction Science Department, the 2017 survey polled 1,974 industry professionals. It is designed to help make sense of the most popular pre-construction software and processes in use among builders.
More Investment in Construction Technology
This year’s survey included hard-hitting questions for construction companies on technology workflows, solutions, and spending. Of particular interest, the survey found a larger percentage of respondents reported spending 1% of their annual sales volume on IT—increasing to 21.8% from 14.1 % in the 2016 survey. In addition, the number of respondents spending less than 1% of their sales volume on IT dropped to 46.4% in 2017 compared to 55.9% in 2016.
For the first time in the ConTech Report’s history, manual data entry showed a decrease, pointing to a more widespread acceptance of investing in technology by construction CEOs, CIOs, and CFOs.
